The four artists featured in VELVET GENERATION, Roman Franc, Gabriela Kolčavová, Igor Malijevský, and Vojtěch V. Sláma, document life in the Czech Republic in the time that directly followed the Velvet Revolution, the non-violent transition of power in 1989. Together their photographic works reflect on the personalization of political happenings in the post-communist Czech Republic and illustrates how the country’s short history of revolution became embedded in their artistic approaches and practices.
Their distinct photographic oeuvres share a common vocabulary, a product of the closeness of the group and the bonds they have created and nurtured within the greater Czech artist community. Living through the transformation of the society into which they were born has stimulated their original work, and their deep visions of humanistic relationships.
Programs in conjunction with the exhibition in Houston include artist talks, lectures, workshops, a companion book publication, and visits to area classrooms to conduct student workshops with the FotoFest learning program.
Exhibition organized by Steven Evans with Miroslav Ambroz.
