FotoFest presents THE ASSEMBLY: Photography from Houston's Galleries, a new exhibition highlighting high-quality photography and video represented by a selection of the city’s contemporary fine art galleries.
Featuring the work of 23 artists, from 10 Houston commercial galleries, the exhibition shows the breadth of contemporary art photography shown in the city. The selection includes young, emerging artists alongside photographers that are well-established internationally. Nearly all are living.

An integral part of a healthy and vibrant art community in any city, commercial galleries work alongside and often in collaboration with artists, museums, and non-profit art presenters to create a functional creative environment that nurtures all participants, from art-maker, to presenters, to collectors. At their finest, art dealers are advocates for and partners with the artists they represent and exhibit. Understanding the role that commercial galleries and gallerists play in the development and dissemination of artists’ work is important to understanding the landscape of a city’s creative community.
Like the artists, the galleries represented in The Assembly possess a diversity of experience. The most established have operated since the 1970s, while the newest are under five years old. Each have established themselves as serious dealers with discerning taste, and an exciting roster of photographers among the artists they represent. Two of the galleries are dedicated photography galleries, while others focus on Contemporary Art, with further specializations such as Latin American art. Several work nationally and internationally, exhibiting at prominent art fairs in New York, Miami and elsewhere.
The exhibition is about the quality and diversity of the individual artists’ talent, the Houston art ecosystem, as well as the galleries and their particular tastes and sensibilities. It offers a chance to see what the individual galleries are known for, and whom they show.
